You need to register (click here)! Registration costs $40 and closes on Wednesday, September 11 at 6pm. The $40 fee covers recruitment supplies like shirts, snacks, and mints (we give out a lot of mints).
Can I afford to join a sorority?
We try to make sure that every potential new member has as much information as possible in regards to finances. On Hall Night (the first night of recruitment), you will receive a detailed breakdown of the cost of membership for each chapter. Additionally, every chapter has its own scholarships and financial aid available to its members. As with any concern, we recommend that you ask questions to the people you talk to during recruitment! They should be able to provide a detailed answer or direct you to their chapter's financial officer for more information.
Are stereotypes about Greek life true at Transy?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is also essentially no. Greek students at Transylvania care about their academics, are involved in a variety of activities, serve their communities, and have friends all over campus. We know the stories that you might see in movies or on the news, but that's not who we are at all. We'd like to encourage you to look at the creeds and values of every chapter to see what we're really about. Ask any member about their experience in Greek life, and you'll be able to see right away that we are not defined by any stereotypes you may have heard!
If I join a chapter will I still have time to play a sport/join a club/be in a play/conquer the world?
Yes! Members of chapters at Transylvania are all over campus - we have athletes, First Engagement Scholars, Admissions Ambassadors, RAs, SGA senators, and anything else you could thing of!
What is disaffiliation and why do recruitment counselors disaffiliate during recruitment?
During the summer, members of the executive counsel and recruitment counselors (Rho Gammas) disaffiliate from their chapters. This means that they give up their letters until recruitment is over - they cover up laptop stickers, put t-shirts in the back of their closet, and stop contact with chapter members. This allows for them to be as unbiased as possible. They have no involvement in their own chapter's recruitment and are truly there to help you! It is also there to provide a level of comfort for you. We want you to be able to talk about any concerns or thoughts you're having with your recruitment counselor without any worry about their own affiliation. You'll be able to know the affiliations of EC and your Rho Gamma on bid day when they run back out to their chapters!
What happens each night of recruitment? What do I wear?
There are three main parts to recruitment at Transy: Hall Night, Community Involvement Night, and Pref Night. There's also a mandatory orientation and then BID DAY! Here's a breakdown of each of these: Orientation September 11, 2019 at 7pm, Strickland Auditorium What It Is: Orientation is mandatory for all women participating in primary recruitment. At orientation, you will learn more about the recruitment process and meet your recruitment counselor so it’s a great time to come with any questions you might have! What to Wear: There is no dress code for orientation so come as you are! Hall Night September 12, 2019 What It Is: For the first round of recruitment, you will meet all four inter/national sororities on campus. This is a time to learn about finances, philanthropy, academics, sisterhood, and other general information. What to Wear: We will provide a sorority recruitment shirt for you, but you can choose your own pants, skirt, shorts, etc. to finish the outfit! Community Involvement Night September 13, 2019 What It Is: During this round, you will visit up to three chapters and learn more about their philanthropic efforts both nationally and within the local community. At this point, start paying closer attention to where you feel most comfortable and how your personal values align with each chapter’s values. What to Wear: For Community Involvement Night, dress is fairly casual and can include a sundress or a nice pair of pants/skirt and a blouse. Preference Night September 14, 2019 What It Is: During Preference Night, you will have the opportunity to visit a maximum of two chapters. These chapters have invited you back because they believe that you would fit in as a sister so be sure to think about what you like about each group and why you would join them. This is a time to have deeper conversations about women’s experiences in their chapter and how you could benefit from membership. What to Wear: This is the most formal night of recruitment, and you can wear a cocktail dress, jumpsuit, dress pants, etc. Heels or flats are fine! Bid Day September 15, 2019 What It Is: On Sunday morning after all of the nights of recruitment, you will arrive to receive your bid (an invitation to join a chapter). After everyone has opened their bids and learned some chants, you will get to run out to your chapter on the lawn of Old Morrison. It's a ton of fun, and chapters have their own bid day parties after run out to celebrate all of their new members (aka YOU). Bid day is also when your Rho Gamma and Panhel EC will run back to their chapters and reveal their affiliation. What to Wear: We provide the shirts, and you'll want to wear shorts or jeans. Wear comfortable shoes! When you run out to a chapter, they will also give you a shirt (two shirts in one day sounds like a win to us).
